The Parthenon is a temple of the Greek goddess Athena, the patron goddess of the ancient City of Athens, whom the people of Athens considered as their protector. Located on the Acropolis, a hill overlooking the city of Athens, its construction began in 447 BC and was completed in 438 BC. It was built under the leadership of Pericles, a Greek politician credited with the founding of the city of Athens. Built in the Doric Style, it is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy. While many treasures have been stored and displayed in the building, the glory of the Parthenon was the gigantic statue of Athena, designed by Phidias and made out of elephant ivory and gold. The statue is now lost and is known only from copies, vase painting, gems, literary descriptions and coins. While the Parthenon had withstood much over time, an explosion during a battle with the Venetians in 1687 was the cause of much of the damage seen today.
